The history of pectin began in the late 18th century, when in 1790 French chemist Louis Nicolas Vauquelin, exploring vegetable products, extracted from fruit juice a substance that had gelling properties. Forty years later Anri Brakonno named it pectic acid (from Greek language “pektos” – “congealed, curdled”).

There are many types of pectin such as sugar beet pectin, apple pectin, citrus pectin, etc. All types of pectin have numerous beneficial health effects; one of the most significant of them is that it is highly effective for body detoxification. Sugar beet pectin among other types has the strongest detoxifying properties. Japanese scientists admit that sugar beet pectin is the most effective for detoxification. It effectively eliminates heavy metals, pesticides, nitrates, radionuclides and other poisonous substances from the body. That’s why pectin is called by many doctors “a gift of nature”.
At hazardous working conditions, the application of pectin by workers significantly reduces the development of occupational diseases. In this regard, USSR Ministry of Health in 1968 legislatively assigned the application of pectin preparations and food rich in pectin to workers of factories and plants with unhealthy working conditions. In 1979 pectin was approved by the chief state sanitary doctor of the USSR as a highly essential nunticient.
