The level of air pollution in Vietnamese cities is approaching the critical indicators

In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City it  is becoming increasingly difficult to breathe. Here's the scientific evidence .

According to a new study published on Tuesday in Hanoi,-  Ho Chi Minh City and a favorite tourist resort Halong currently suffer from severe air pollution.

In Ho Chi Minh City the amount of poisonous gases and small particles of dirt in the air exceeds all standards.

Investigation of the Ministry of Natural Resources and  Environment of Vietnam showed that in the period between 2011 and 2015, air quality was worse in many cities, especially in 3 cities such as  Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city  and Ha Long.

The results of measuring the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in Hanoi, -showed that it was 1.3 times higher than the permissible level, and in Ha Long - 1.2 times higher . The HCMC concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in Ho Chi Minh city has been detected twice higher than  the allowed level.

High levels of nitrogen dioxide increases the risk of respiratory diseases in the population. It burns the mucous membrane of the lungs and can reduce the resistance to infections, causing problems such as wheezing, coughing, colds, flu and bronchitis. Children, asthmatics and the elderly who suffer from heart diseases are most at risk.

About 140 new cars, 750 new motorcycles are registered every day in Ho Chi Minh City, is the most populous city in Vietnam, where the population is  12 million people.

Hoang Duong Tung, Deputy Director of the Organization of Vietnam Environmental protection, said that road traffic and industrial activities of people is the  main source of air pollution in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The cause of this problem in Ha Long is  coal mining and thermal power plants emissions.

Air Quality Index, measured in real time showed that the estimated the level of pollution in Ho Chi Minh City is "unhealthy." This means that exposure to the outdoor air for children and people with respiratory problems should be limited.

Air condition in Hanoi was also repeatedly assessed as “unhealthy”, and sometimes even as "dangerous", which means that is theoretically  recommended for all people  to avoid staying outdoors. The capital of Vietnam today reported  to have 5.5 million private vehicles, including more than 4.9 million motorcycles and more than 70 cars and 700 motorbikes for every kilometer of road.

New research from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment also found in the air high level of solid  particles of dirt, which can cause lung cancer.

The amount of solids equal to or less than 10 microns (PM10), measured in Hanoi  was 1.4 times higher than the safe limit. PM10 belong to the most harmful pollutants, because their size is seven times smaller than a human hair, and when they are inhaled, they  can bypass the natural defenses of the respiratory system and penetrate into the lungs.

In Ha Long the number of particles   recorded  was  1.2 times higher  than prescribed norm.
